SUMMARY:Recycling for Earth Week
DESCRIPTION:Confused about what you can and can’t recycle?  Worried about the impact of China’s decision to stop accepting American recyclables?  Wondering what you can do to decrease your household waste? \nRutherford Green Team member Brian Hanson-Harding  will explain the current crisis in recycling nationwide\, which has been exacerbated by China’s “National Sword” policy\, and how it impacts Rutherford residents. \nThursday\, April 25\, 2019\, 7:30pm – 9pm at the Rutherford Congregational United Church of Christ. \nAttendees will learn exactly what can and can’t be recycled in Rutherford\, how to prepare waste for the recycling bin\, and how to avoid having your recycling end up as trash.  Photos and videos will be shown of what happens to Rutherford’s recycling.  Information will be provided about recycling large and hazardous items and alternate ways of disposing of waste.  There will also be discussion of various methods of waste reduction. \nBrian Hanson-Harding has been a member of the Rutherford Green Team for the past five years and has done presentations on recycling and composting for local community groups. A former teacher\, he advised SOPE\, the environmental group at Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan\, for eight years\, during which time he started up a recycling program\, established an organic garden\, instituted composting\, and received grants for environmental initiatives.  He is the author of the book Composting: Turning Food Waste into Rich Soil\, published by Rosen Publishing in 2014.

SUMMARY:RCC Families Belong Together Rally
DESCRIPTION:Families Belong Together Rally\, Thursday\, June 14\, 2018\, 12pm – 2pm\, at Rutherford Congregational Church UCC. Hosted by RCCUCC & Families Belong Together \n\n“Join us on this nationwide day of action to show our elected officials that we will not passively stand by while immigration officers tear children from the arms of their parents. The cruelty and abuse these children suffer cannot\, and will not\, be tolerated. Families Belong Together opposes the cruel\, inhumane and unjustified separation of children from their parents along the U.S. border with Mexico and at other ports of entry into the U.S. We protest the conditions in which these children are kept. We protest the irreversible trauma that has already been perpetrated on these children and their parents for the crime of seeking a better life. To separate immigrant families\, victims of violence\, hunger and poverty\, is to re-violate them. Children as young as 18 months are torn from their mother’s arms by the U.S. government. This is violent abuse. These families are victimized again by the government to which they turn for help. Families Belong Together opposes the inhumane policies of the Trump Administration\, Border Patrol\, and I.C.E. and calls for immediate reform.”
