Hurley\, Superintendent of Rutherford Public Schools \nDear Community Members\, \nOver the past three years\, the Board of Education (BOE) has been identifying and studying the challenges facing the district so that we may maintain\, improve\, and expand successful programs for our students. \nFollowing extensive research\, site visits\, meetings with community stakeholders\, and community-wide surverys conducted by a committee of school and community members\, the need for expanded and improved facilities became clear. A plan to address these concerns has been developed by the BOE and is currently being presented to the Rutherford community as a referendum vote on Tuesday\, October 2\, 2018. DESCRIPTION:Free\, one-hour Green Team workshop\, “Keep the rain from the drain\,” on Tuesday\, October 9\, 2018 at 6:45 pm at the Rutherford Public Library. \n\n\n \n\n\nEvery time it rains in Rutherford\, the waterways die a little.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe town\, 38% covered by impervious surfaces\, has “severely impaired waterways” because of all the stormwater — polluted by the oils and chemicals that wash off roads and lawns — that has nowhere else to go.\n\n\n \n\n\nDr. Chris Obropta\, Extension Specialist for Water Resources at Rutgers University\, will explain what the Borough of Rutherford and individuals can do to help capture stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces (like roads\, driveways\, rooftops\, and parking lots).\n\n\n \n\n\nHe will explain about the benefits of rain barrels\, rain gardens\, pervious pavements\, cisterns\, and other means of reducing stormwater runoff. He will also discuss the green infrastructure feasibility study that has been completed for Rutherford and some of the potential projects that have been identified.

DESCRIPTION:Confused about what you can and can’t recycle? Worried about the impact of China’s decision to stop accepting American recyclables? Wondering what you can do to decrease your household waste? \nCome to a free\, one-hour Rutherford Green Team workshop on Reducing and Recycling\, Tuesday\, May 14 at 6:45 pm in Rutherford Public Library\, 150 Park Avenue\, Rutherford. \nDPW Head Chris Seidler and Green Team member Brian Hanson-Harding will explain the current crisis in recycling nationwide\, which has been exacerbated by China’s “National Sword” policy\, and how it impacts Rutherford residents. Those attending will also learn about the free new recycling app\, RecycleCoach. \nAttendees will learn exactly what can and can’t be recycled in Rutherford\, how to prepare waste for the recycling bin\, and how to avoid having your recycling end up as trash. Photos and videos will be shown depicting what happens to Rutherford’s recycling. Information will be provided about recycling large and hazardous items and alternate ways of disposing of waste. There will also be discussion of various methods of waste reduction.
